dear quirk,
i know i've neglected you lately, but i've been extremely busy lounging at the pool and watching these two monkeys swim. I'll be back soon.
love,

At an outdoor table at a great restaurant in Market Square playing with my new camera...
Waiter: Wow. That's what you call a camera.
Me: Yeah, I know. It's new... (hugging camera)
Waiter: I mean, that's a huge lens!
Me: It's great. (stroking the actually not-so-big 28-135mm kit lens) I'm just learning it, 'cause it's new ...
Waiter: Are you a photographer?
Me: I am now ... smile.

I always loved this building, not just because of that great sign on the roof, but because I used to smell the coffee roasting when I would drive by here in the early mornings on my way to work. I haven't smelled that in a few years, though.
Now this building is apartments, which makes me love it even more. I mean, would you look at those windows? And they left the coffee cup on the roof. How could you NOT love it?

I'm coming up empty tonight, people, having just realized that the longest day of the year will be in a mere 12 days. That means that in 13 days the dread turnaround of light vs dark will begin. Dang.

if i lived in Texas, i would own this truck.
and i would drive it down to the general store to buy hot sauce.
and i would hang out under the awning outside and play checkers with jeb.
jeb has no teeth.
but he always wins at checkers.
next summer i want to rent an apartment downtown
(even though we have a perfectly good house just 20 minutes away)
just so i can walk around to cool restaurants
(even though i could park my car there now and walk around anyway)
and sit at tables in windows reading literature and eating good food
(even though it might actually not be good for me)
anytime i want.
(might i add, especially gelato)

they tried something new yesterday.
they don't always excel at trying new things.
especially things that involve risk.
they were awesome.they didn't want to quit.
they are the coolest kids i know.
i'm not prejudiced one bit. no sir.
i couldn't be prouder that they are mine.

i'm completely geeking out over this photo.
it is straight out of the camera - no processing.
that just never happens...

I read the news today, oh boy ...
Possibly by tomorrow these beautiful beaches will be soiled.
I can't begin to express how angry I feel about this...
...or how profoundly sad I feel about what might be lost.
